Rusty Quill Gaming Podcast
Erasing the line.
“Expect epic battles, critical misses, and the occasional special guest as the party strive for fame and glory whilst cracking wise and trying not to kill one another.”
Rusty Quill’s podcasting history begins with Rusty Quill Gaming, a fantasy steampunk “TTRPG Actual Play” – a podcast where a group of people play through a tabletop role-playing game, guided by a Games Master. Alexander J Newall took on this role for Rusty Quill Gaming, using the Pathfinder system as a springboard to create a long-form plot and setting for players Ben Meredith, Bryn Monroe, James Ross, Lydia Nicholas and Helen Gould to engage with. The six-year-long campaign was named Erasing the Line.
Rusty Quill Gaming launched in 2015 and quickly became beloved by fans thanks to the lovable characters, the high-stakes plot, and the humour created by the players’ natural improvisational chemistry. All of this backed by Alex’s compelling worldbuilding, took the players around the world in an alternate-universe 19th century, with a helping of magic.
Rusty Quill Gaming ran for an impressive 217 episodes, and eventually wrapped in 2021, although it remains one of Rusty Quill’s most beloved productions to this day.
Interesting Facts
- Due to issues with the initial recording set-up, the first episode was re-recorded three times
- As one of the budget methods for making RQG a reality, Alex J Newall has cited use of the ‘cooling ham’ to avoid the catastrophic collapse of the soundboard used for recording. This is exactly what it sounds like.
- Sam Jones (a.k.a Sam, Sam, the Music Man) has been composing music for Rusty Quill since Rusty Quill Gaming, starting with the theme itself. (Patrons can listen to Jones & Alexander J Newall talk about this with Katie Seaton here!)
