Outliers

Stories from the edges of history.

Commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces, this unique audio drama series aimed to uncover the stories of people often left in the shadows of mainstream history—those on the margins, from minority groups to overlooked figures whose lives shaped the past in unseen ways. Every episode was recorded on-site at one of the historic palaces, adding an atmospheric authenticity to the storytelling. The series brought together some of the most talented writers in the audio drama community, including Jonathan Sims, David K. Barnes, Gabriel Urbina, and Beth Crane, each crafting compelling narratives that breathed life into hidden histories.

Each dramatized episode was followed by a bonus interview with the writer, offering insight into the research, creative process, and real historical events that inspired the story. This blend of immersive storytelling and thoughtful discussion not only entertained but also educated listeners, shining a light on voices from the past that might otherwise have been forgotten.

Reviews

How do you make British palaces — and their bygone occupants — come alive without a trip to the U.K.? You listen to ‘Outliers — Stories From the Edge of History’. - Phoebe Lett - New York Times
Rusty Quill’s (Magnus Archives) series of monologues from characters just outside the spotlight of history immerses us in intimate moments. Historic locations aren’t cold dusty rooms, they’re environments where secrets are shared, mischief is wrought and excitement is incited.” - Lindsay Harris Friel - The Podcast Host
Anthology series where each episode has a different writer and narrator, focussing on a different semi-fictionalised character from British history (clerk, lady-in-waiting, prisoner, kitchen boy, etc.). The stories tend to focus on a dramatic point in their lives, and are generally very gripping to listen to. Well produced podcast series with some really nice soundscaping. I recommend also listening to the interviews with the authors of each episode. - Review from Podchaser
