Created as a means for up-and-coming audio drama writers to pitch their shortform stories to Rusty Quill, Neon Inkwell showcases a range of talent from all walks of life, with Elizabeth Moffat taking the reigns as showrunner. It launched in November 2023 with Of That Colossal Wreck, written by long-running RQ collaborators Jonathan Sims and Sasha Sienna, and has so far seen the release of three more shows, with more to come.
Of That Colossal Wreck
When five artificially grown people awaken on an abandoned space station long after the extinction of humanity, they must confront their purpose, their future and the carnivorous alien beings that have taken over the facility. (Directed by Maxamillian John and written by Sasha Sienna and Jonathan Sims).
Inexplicables
Following their mother’s death, thirty-something disasters Harold and Meredith return to their hometown of Gravesby in the North of England for the funeral. There, they must also contend with the ICS, their late mother’s social care business. But the ICS and its clients are a lot stranger than they expected, being that ICS is community for Vampires, Werewolves, zombies and more. (Written by Tom Critch and Alexander J Newall, directed by Maddy Searle).
The Pit Below Paradise
As a central religious figure in the basil-loving community of Paradise Village, no-one is more sure of their future than Dorian/Dori (he/her). But when the date of his expected sacrifice is rescheduled, Dori is forced to enter the wider world and attend a local college. That’s when Will enters her life, a former gravedigger with no reason to suspect his vibrant new roommate is anything but what she seems… (Written by J Evelyn Gaskell, directed by Micah Rodriguez and Stephanie Resendes).
Broken Hearted Monsters
Broken Hearted Monsters follows Frank, the estranged creature of Dr Frankenstein who must travel to his former home for his creator’s funeral. Frank, not wanting to face the bitter reality of an unresolved relationship, invites his ex-boyfriend, Dracula, along for the ultimate American road trip. The wounds from their break-up are still fresh as they make their way across country, stopping at mundane tourist traps, eating at tacky diners and dissecting their former romance; the good and the bad. (Written by Morgan Ormond and SC Ormond, directed by Amani Zardoe).
Welcome to Fosters
Coming soon in 2025, Welcome to Fosters is a magical mystery set in an alternate universe. In Sydney, Australia, a small-time private consulting wizard and her new apprentice attempt to keep the business afloat by removing magical pests, dispersing restless spirits and tracking down a group of necromancers out to take over the world. (Written by Imogen Cassidy and directed by Chris Magilton).
Reviews
Off to a phenomenally strong start in both concept and execution. The music and the sound design (both by Katie Seaton) are BLOWING me away and we’ve only just begun. Dialogue feels natural and perfectly paced to move the story along — I cannot wait to find out what these characters are in for.” - Podchaser review (Of That Colossal Wreck)
I have loved all of the shows on this feed so far, but I NEED to talk about The Pit Below Paradise specifically. This show was unlike anything I have listened to before and I found it really refreshing. I thought the plot and the characters were extremely well-written and I really liked the premise of the show. The queer representation in this was also very refreshing in the sense that it showcased identities and relationship dynamics that tend to be overlooked in a lot of media. Also, big shoutout to the music and editing in this show.” - Apple Podcasts Review
